George Wellington Van Tassel (March 12, 1910 – February 9, 1978) was an American aeronautical engineer and aircraft mechanic who worked for major aerospace contractors including Douglas Aircraft, Hughes Aircraft, and Lockheed from 1930 to 1947, eventually achieving the position of Top Flight Inspector at Hughes. In 1947, he relocated to the Mojave Desert near Giant Rock, California, where he established an airport, restaurant, and dude ranch. Beginning in 1952, Van Tassel claimed to have received telepathic contact from extraterrestrials, primarily attributed to a group called the Ashtar Command and a being from Venus. These alleged encounters inspired him to found The Ministry of Universal Wisdom and The College of Universal Wisdom, and to undertake construction of the Integratron—a domed wooden structure he claimed was designed for anti-gravity research, time travel, and human rejuvenation. Van Tassel organized the annual Giant Rock Interplanetary Spacecraft Convention from 1953 to 1971, which attracted approximately 10,000 attendees at its peak in 1959. He authored several works including I Rode a Flying Saucer (1952/1955) and died suddenly of a heart attack on February 9, 1978.
