Daniel Milton Ladd (1903–1960) was a senior FBI official and one of the earliest agents in Bureau history. Born in Fargo, North Dakota, to U.S. Senator Edwin F. Ladd, he joined the FBI on November 5, 1925, after earning a law degree from George Washington University. He rose to prominence as head of the FBI's Security Division (1941–1942 onward, later Domestic Intelligence), leading major investigations into Nazi sabotage (Operation Pastorius), espionage cases (Hiss-Chambers, Rosenberg), and communist activities during the Cold War. On May 5, 1949, Hoover appointed him Assistant to the Director (Number 3 position, second only to Clyde Tolson), overseeing all FBI investigative activities in criminal and subversive fields. Ladd also oversaw early FBI involvement in UFO investigations (1947–1954, before the Air Force took primary responsibility). He retired in 1954 after 29 years of service and died July 11, 1960, in an automobile accident in Sanford, Florida.
