Selected as part of NASA Astronaut Group 5 in April 1966, he flew two space missions: Skylab-3 (July–September 1973) as pilot, where he conducted solar observations and spent 11 hours on two spacewalks, and STS-3 (March 22–30, 1982) as Space Shuttle Columbia commander, commanding the third shuttle mission. He accumulated over 1,619 hours in space, was the CAPCOM recipient of the Apollo 13 'Houston, we've had a problem' message, and was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1997. He retired from NASA on October 1, 1983, and from the Marine Corps on November 1, 1983.
