Harrison Hagan 'Jack' Schmitt (born July 3, 1935) is an American geologist, former NASA astronaut, university professor, and former U.S. Senator from New Mexico. Selected in June 1965 as one of NASA's first scientist-astronauts, Schmitt served as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 17 (December 1972), becoming the twelfth and second-to-last person to walk on the Moon and the first professional scientist to do so. During three lunar surface expeditions totaling over 22 hours, he collected critical geological samples including Troctolite 76535, described as 'without doubt the most interesting sample returned from the Moon.' After retiring from NASA in August 1975, Schmitt was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1976, serving one term (1977–1983) as a Republican from New Mexico. He remains the most recent living person to have walked on the Moon.

Desambiguação: Harrison Hagan 'Jack' Schmitt (b. 1935) is the only professional geologist to have walked on the Moon. Not to be confused with other individuals named Schmitt in historical records.
