Disambiguation: NOT to be confused with other individuals named Ladd. This is Daniel Milton Ladd (1903–1960), the prominent FBI official, not a civilian or unrelated person.
Daniel Milton Ladd (October 30, 1903 – July 11, 1960), nicknamed 'Mickey,' was a prominent FBI special agent and the bureau's third-ranking official under Director J. Edgar Hoover. Born in Fargo, North Dakota, to U.S. Senator Edwin F. Ladd, he joined the FBI on November 5, 1925, after earning his law degree from George Washington University. In 1941, he became head of the FBI's Security Division (later renamed Domestic Intelligence Division in 1942), where he led major counterintelligence operations against Nazi saboteurs during World War II and communist activities during the early Cold War, including investigations into the Amerasia affair, the Hiss-Chambers case, and the Rosenberg espionage case. On May 5, 1949, Hoover appointed Ladd to the number 3 position of Assistant to the Director, where he supervised all FBI investigative activities in both criminal and subversive fields until his retirement in 1954. Historical records indicate his involvement in UFO-related investigations during his tenure. He died in an automobile accident in Sanford, Florida, on July 11, 1960, while preparing for a congressional campaign.
