He founded Great Western Fire Control Supply in Boise, Idaho in 1940, which sold and installed fire suppression systems. Arnold is best known for his UFO sighting on June 24, 1947, near Mount Rainier, Washington, when he reported seeing nine shiny unidentified flying objects traveling at an estimated 1,200+ mph. His description of their motion as skipping like 'a saucer if you skip it across water' led the press to coin the terms 'flying saucer' and 'flying disc,' catalyzing the modern era of UFO reporting. In 1962, he ran unsuccessfully as the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Idaho. He died of colorectal cancer in Bellevue, Washington.
