Harrison Hagan 'Jack' Schmitt (born July 3, 1935, in Santa Rita, New Mexico) is an American geologist, former NASA astronaut, university professor, and former U.S. Senator from New Mexico (1977–1983). He earned a Ph.D. in geology from Harvard University (1964) and worked for the U.S. Geological Survey before joining NASA. In December 1972, he served as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 17, becoming the twelfth person to walk on the Moon and the only professional scientist to have landed there, collecting the famous Troctolite 76535 sample. After retiring from NASA in 1975, he was elected to the Senate as a Republican, serving as chairman of the Science, Technology, and Space Subcommittee. He subsequently became an adjunct professor and has remained an advocate for lunar resource utilization.
