George Wellington Van Tassel (March 12, 1910 – February 9, 1978) was an American author, inventor, and ufologist who became a prominent early UFO contactee in the 1950s. After working as a flight inspector for Hughes Aircraft and other aerospace firms, he relocated to the California desert in 1947 and established operations at Giant Rock, including a restaurant, airport, and dude ranch. Beginning in 1953, Van Tassel claimed telepathic contact with extraterrestrial beings, particularly from Venus, and founded the Ministry/College of Universal Wisdom to document these communications. He organized the annual Giant Rock Interplanetary Spacecraft Convention (1953–1971), which attracted up to 10,000 attendees at its peak, becoming a central gathering for UFO contactees and researchers. Van Tassel directed construction of the Integratron, a distinctive dome structure allegedly built according to extraterrestrial specifications to facilitate time travel and human rejuvenation research. He authored multiple books including 'I Rode in a Flying Saucer' (1952) and died of sudden cardiac arrest on February 9, 1978, in Santa Ana, California.
