General Hoyt Sanford Vandenberg (1899–1954) was the second Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, serving from April 30, 1948, to June 30, 1953, under Presidents Truman and Eisenhower. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he rose through the ranks during World War II as commanding general of the Ninth Air Force in Europe. Prior to his Air Force role, he served as the second Director of Central Intelligence (June 1946–May 1947). During his tenure as Air Force Chief of Staff, Vandenberg received Project Sign briefings regarding unidentified flying objects; Project Sign personnel had proposed an "Estimate of the Situation" suggesting an extraterrestrial hypothesis, but Vandenberg rejected it due to insufficient evidence and allegedly ordered related documents destroyed. He died of prostate cancer at Walter Reed Medical Center on April 2, 1954.
