Captain William L. Davidson was a U.S. Army Air Forces Military Intelligence officer stationed at Hamilton Field, California, assigned to the Fourth Air Force. In July 1947, he and Lieutenant Frank M. Brown became the first military officers to officially investigate a UFO report, traveling to Washington to examine alleged evidence from the Maury Island incident. On August 1, 1947, Davidson and Brown died in a B-25 Mitchell aircraft crash near Kelso, Washington, while returning from their investigation, making them the first fatalities directly connected to UFO investigation activities. The Maury Island case was later determined to be a hoax.
