Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. (born January 20, 1930) is a retired United States Air Force officer and NASA astronaut. He holds a doctorate in astronautics from MIT and was selected for NASA's astronaut program in 1963. Aldrin flew two space missions: Gemini 12 (1966), where he conducted record-breaking spacewalks, and Apollo 11 (1969), where he became the second person to walk on the Moon. During the Apollo 11 mission, he reported observing unusual phenomena including a sizeable object near the Moon and a bright light source the crew speculated might be a laser. He retired from NASA in 1971 and the Air Force in 1972 (later honorary promotion to Brigadier General in 2023).
