Herbert Bain Knowles (1894–1976) was a United States Navy admiral who graduated from the Naval Academy in 1917. During World War II, he commanded several submarines in the Pacific Theater, participating in a dozen campaigns and receiving the Legion of Merit five times. After the war, he taught submarine electricity at a Navy school in New London, Connecticut, before retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1947. In retirement, Knowles became involved in civilian UFO research as a board member of the National Investigations Committee On Aerial Phenomena (NICAP), where he interviewed UFO contactees including Frances Swan and Betty Hill.
