The National Security Council (NSC) is a federal executive council within the Executive Office of the President of the United States, established by the National Security Act of 1947 (effective September 18, 1947). Chaired by the President and composed of senior cabinet officials and national security advisors, the NSC advises and assists the President on domestic, foreign, and military policies related to national security. The Council coordinates security policies across government agencies. Historically, the NSC ordered CIA studies of UFO reports in 1952, and in recent years has overseen declassification efforts related to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) materials.
