The Liaison Section was a War Department organizational unit established by General Order 23 on March 18, 1892, initially tasked with issuing military maps, publications, and liaison duties between the Office of the Secretary of War and state militias. Its mandate expanded to include collecting and publishing foreign military intelligence, administering military attaché affairs, maintaining military libraries, and preparing war maps and campaign histories. The Section was transferred to the War Department General Staff (WDGS) on August 15, 1903, becoming the Second Division, and was subsequently abolished in 1908 following a WDGS reorganization, with its functions transferred to the newly established Second Section. The parent War Department itself was abolished in 1947 by the National Security Act of 1947, replaced by the Department of the Army.
