GEPAN (Groupe d'Études des Phénomènes Aérospatiaux Non-identifiés / Study Group for Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena) was established in 1977 in Toulouse, France, as an official agency of the Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES) to collect, analyze, and investigate reports of unidentified aerospace phenomena (UAP). Founded by Claude Poher with support from CNES director Yves Sillard, GEPAN operated until 1988, when it was reorganized as SEPRA (Service d'Expertise des Phénomènes de Rentrée Atmosphérique). In 2005, it was renamed again to GEIPAN (Groupe d'études et d'informations sur les phénomènes aérospatiaux non identifiés), its current designation. The organization channels reports from the French Gendarmerie, civil aviation, air force, and meteorological services, and conducted field investigations including the notable Trans-en-Provence case. In 2007, CNES released GEPAN/SEPRA archives to the public, making France one of the first nations to open UAP records officially.
