The Air Research and Development Command (ARDC) was established on January 23, 1950, as the Research and Development Command of the United States Air Force, becoming operational February 1, 1950. It consolidated research and development units previously under the Air Materiel Command, centralizing Air Force scientific and technological efforts during the early Cold War. The command was redesignated Air Force Systems Command (AFSC) effective April 1, 1961, with expanded responsibility for weapon system acquisition. ARDC/AFSC oversaw development of cutting-edge aircraft including the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft, B-52 Stratofortress bomber, and SR-71 Blackbird, as well as missile and space programs. The command was inactivated July 1, 1992, when it merged with Air Force Logistics Command to form Air Force Materiel Command.
