The United States Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was a civilian federal agency established by the Atomic Energy Act of 1946 (effective January 1, 1947), tasked with controlling the development, production, and regulation of nuclear energy for both military and civilian purposes. Headed by a chairman and board of commissioners, the AEC succeeded the Manhattan Engineer District and oversaw nuclear weapons development, national laboratories (Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, Argonne, Brookhaven), and promotion of commercial nuclear power. Notably, AEC installations experienced recurring UFO sightings during the 1940s–1950s, including incidents at Los Alamos and Hanford, prompting the agency to request information on flying saucers from other government entities in 1950. The AEC was dissolved on January 19, 1975, by the Energy Reorganization Act, with its functions divided between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Energy Research and Development Administration.
Enriquecimento (PT-BR)
